Psalm 60 structure:
V1-5, David cries out in defeat.
V6-8, God responds - Israel belongs to Him, and their enemies are subject to Him.
V9-12, David cries for help. Victory and defeat belong to God.
Read Psalm 60. Sin destroys.
The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.
(Romans 1:18)
All men are without excuse. No one does good, not even one. God always rejects sin.
David was handed over to his enemies in Psalm 60, it would seem, because of the sin of God’s people. David battled the pagan nations. We battle the philosophies of this world. The world says that man can accomplish anything in his own strength and his own way. Man is the center of all things and does not need God. For our purposes, I will refer to this particular philosophy as Humanism.
To the degree that we have served the philosophies of the world, Humanism, is the degree that God has rejected us and handed us over to our sin and to our enemies.
Consider that Humanism has run rampant in our culture with a devastating impact on Christians and non-Christians alike. As great spiritual battles have moved through our generation, we have suffered great losses to the enemy.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
(Romans 1:24-25)
The creature that we worship is ourselves. For deliverance by man is in vain (Psalm 60:11b). Yet we are always trying to deliver ourselves. It is vanity. It is the lie that we have believed. But there is hope.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

We must repent. We must cry out for mercy for God to save us, as David did.
In repentance, we find Christ and resurrection life. But the world offers only death. This is a matter of life and death. This is true in the first step of faith that brings you into the kingdom of God, and it is true for every believer as we walk through spiritual battles of this life on earth.
12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
